Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center sought to add 2 new ORs to an existing surgery suite at the hospital’s Main Campus building. This required the existing M2 waiting area, reception, and consult rooms to be relocated. As the project progressed, the client added the renovation of the M6 waiting area to the project scope. The resulting waiting areas strike a balance between comfort and function, fostering a residential feel with resilient materials that prioritize infection control.

The existing waiting room on the 2nd floor had a limiting floor to floor height, with substantial structure in place to support a Mechanical Mezzanine on the 3rd floor. Existing structural beams impeded on the required OR minimum ceiling height, so modification to the existing structure was required. Additionally, the limited plenum height limited the allowable mechanical distribution within the OR; hence, a plenum ‘CleanSuite’ system was implemented, which was fully coordinated with the modified structure, boom mount locations, and lighting.

With an aggressive design and verification schedule required to maintain the enabling schedule, E4H, along with our consultants, aggressively coordinated user group meetings over a two-month span to obtain design sign-off. This included multiple meetings to cover patient, staff and material workflow, confirmation of expected cases and design of the OR functionality, and careful consideration of the required equipment. Concurrent meetings were held to develop both the OR suite along with the new waiting area and consultation rooms.
