The relocation of the observation unit at Mount Sinai Hospital is part of a multi-phase renovation project to modernize the emergency department. The unit’s new, expanded location allows Mount Sinai to better serve patients who need additional care and observation following emergency treatment.
Located next to the emergency department, the 24-bay observation unit improves staff workflow and increases patient throughput. The design includes two patient care pods, allowing the unit to grow when additional beds are needed. Clinical support spaces between the pods allow staff to administer care with efficiency and ease. Four private observation rooms provide an extra measure of space and calm.
Because the unit is below grade and without access to natural light, bringing the outside in was crucial to the interior design. Connections to nature are established through images of verdant trees and blue skies, complemented by natural wood finishes. The design seamlessly integrates with the rest of the emergency department, creating a cohesive look and feel throughout.
