Combining the expertise of Duncanville ISD leadership, early childhood educators, and the Huckabee team, Smith Early Learning Academy transforms Smith Elementary School into an interactive early childhood center that prioritizes equity, space, optimization, and future academic programs.
The innovative design features four biophilic pods with seasonal themes that create distinct learning neighborhoods, each represented by a primary color. Teachers move with their students between 18 classrooms, nine standard and nine themed experiential spaces, along color-coded wayfinding paths featuring the Duncanville panther. A library houses a reading area and professional development suite. In the dining area, healthy habits is the theme.
To envision the new facility, the leadership team defined the school’s vision, values, aesthetics, and educational priorities. The resulting design aligns with the district’s research and goals, integrating biophilic principles, wayfinding, and experiential learning. Together, these features spark curiosity and encourage exploration in little learners, while a focus on safety and faculty involvement promotes student wellness and success.
