When a Flagship No Longer Fits: Rebuilding a Hospital for a New Era of Care
Tuesday, September 29 | 4:15 PM | Session #C08 | Charlotte, NC
What does it mean to relocate an entire flagship hospital campus with a 170-year legacy built to serve a community that no longer lives in the same place? For Roper St. Francis Healthcare, dramatic population shifts prompted a rethinking of access, identity, and long‑term capital, stewardship. Guided by a data‑driven, systemwide master plan, the project aligned demographic modeling, service line forecasting, facility assessments, and community engagement to recalibrate care delivery across the region. Rather than a one‑for‑one replacement, the new flagship campus represents a strategic response to evolving population needs, prioritizing access, scalability, and experience. Insights from more than 100 care sites informed priorities for ambulatory expansion, modernization, and regional accessibility. Developed collaboratively by E4H and SOM, the campus translates these goals into a resilient, adaptable environment shaped by its Lowcountry context and community input.
