Fair Haven Community Health Center Responds During Benefits Pause

Healthcare, News
With the recent federal shutdown pausing food benefits for many Americans, Fair Haven Community Health Care (FHCHC) stepped up as an essential lifeline for its community. Out of its new facility in New Haven, Connecticut, the non-profit organization mobilized to provide food support by partnering with local vendors to distribute daily food vouchers. Residents lined up each morning to access resources, highlighting the center’s immediate impact during a time of uncertainty. FHCHC’s deep community integration and versatile facility enabled this quick response, reinforcing the organization’s role as a trusted neighborhood resource.

A staple of its community, FHCHC has long focused on addressing the full spectrum of wellness: physical, behavioral, and social. Its new facility, delivered by MOREgroup’s healthcare team, expands its impact as a difference maker in fighting hunger.

Located at the gateway to New Haven, the new Fair Haven Community Health Center strengthens FHCHC’s ability to deliver integrated care and community support in one accessible location. It was shaped through extensive engagement with residents to ensure it reflects and serves their needs. Many face significant socioeconomic challenges like poverty and a lack of health insurance.

During normal operations, FHCHC integrates healthcare with community education spaces, including a “food farmacy” to help connect residents to fresh, healthy ingredients. These ingredients will be grown within the rooftop garden that supports the center’s nutrition programs and serves as a teaching resource for local families.

Sharing food vouchers was yet another display of their commitment to services that address both immediate needs and long-term wellness, ensuring patients and community members will have the resources they need to stay healthy and supported.
