This project is a consolidation and expansion of the cardiovascular clinical program including cardiology, EP, device clinic, and heart failure. It is located directly above the cath labs on the 2nd floor allowing for ease of access for the medical staff between the inpatient treatment and outpatient clinic.
The cardiovascular clinic was previously in a different building, and the community needs have outgrown the available clinic space. The relocation and expansion to the 3rd floor allowed for a co-location of all clinic needs while being nearby the inpatient cath labs. It also allows for additional exam room space to meet the needs of the community.
Biggest Challenge: Of paramount concern to the client was avoiding disruption to the cath labs below the new 3rd floor space. This meant leaving a lot of large ductwork in place and fitting the clinic around the obstructions. Proximity of waiting areas to the three different clinics was a driver of the layout of the check-in and waiting areas. We took advantage of the window line to create a long, linear waiting area that provides a connection point to the entry of all clinics with distinct waiting areas per clinic.
During design, the desired plan layouts resulted in relocated several large ducts. A new stair tower was also requested to assist with vertical connection. During construction, several challenges were identified with both of these measures, so E4H redesigned 50% of the floor plan to allow ducts to remain while also removing the stair tower. Due to major discrepancies in slab levelness, we initially called for a full topping slab. During construction, we worked with the Owner and GC to come up with a method to limit the extents of the topping slab and employ self-leveling skim coats where necessary to still meet expectations while reducing cost. These three measures saved approximately $650,000.
