The new Barton Elementary School will encourage learners and educators to explore, experiment, and create a world of new possibilities through the intentional utilization of every space that supports the Irving ISD instructional vision. This school will be equipped with a STEM Academy program designed to progressively introduce the innovative and highly collaborative instructional approach to students as they grow throughout all grade levels.
The two-story building design and floor plan will reveal a departure from the past school layouts, providing a more overall open learning environment that is organized in clusters rather than grade pods. This layout provides more flexibility for growth and more effective progression between lower grade levels to more open and collaborative areas for the 3rd to 5th grade levels. All grade levels are situated around collaboration areas, which gradually allow for the open learning environment approach. Clerestory windows bring natural light into each of these collaborative areas. All grade level and academy classrooms also boast their own windows. In addition to providing well-lit spaces, dedicated outdoor learning spaces, designed with direct connection to interior spaces, promote a dialogue with nature.
