After a series of test fits, this location was chosen due to its’ proximity to the feeder high school. Utilizing the same stone and brick materials as the high school creates a universal aesthetic for the district amongst their facilities. The layout of the elementary school is based on the district’s prototype, with the same series of classroom wings for a capacity of 900 students, maintaining equity among the schools across the district. After listening to staff needs, designs increased the size of the cafeteria, gym and fine arts areas. The music room was moved to open into the cafeteria, creating access to the stage from the back.
A highlight of the rainforest themed library are the two- and one-story trees with tunnel components that offer areas for group and independent play. A campfire zone creates a centralized reading space for all. The entrance to the maker space continues this outdoor theme with a trellis system that invokes the feeling of walking into summer camp.
