Created to support Aubrey ISD’s rapid growth, Owens Middle School was shaped through a collaborative process engaging district leaders, educators, students, and community members. Design charrettes and space-planning workshops established a campus focused on safety, functionality, and future growth, with capacity for classroom expansion and an organized layout that supports efficient circulation and supervision.
The design draws inspiration from Aubrey’s railroad heritage, creating a strong visual connection to the community. At the heart of the campus, an iconic red truss bridge modeled after a historic railroad bridge spans the library, becoming a defining feature and memorable focal point throughout the building. In-house environmental graphic designs reinforce the theme, depicting local trains, railroad crossings, landscapes, and school traditions.
A unique building form creates open collaboration spaces that support modern teaching and learning while giving students places to gather beyond the classroom. The centrally located library connects academic wings while maintaining visibility and supervision, creating a natural hub for the campus. Contemporary features, including large bifold glass doors at the gymnasium, covered outdoor dining, and distinctive exterior detailing, give the campus a modern character, while Aubrey’s signature red creates a cohesive visual identity throughout.
