Ambulatory Care, Mental Health + Wellness
The Mount Sinai-Harlem Health Center is an adaptive reuse project of an early-1900s timber frame parking garage into a 12-story medical office building. The 89,000 SF facility is home to the Institute for Advanced Medicine (IAM), dedicated to providing care for underserved communities and patients with specialized needs.
To bring the project to life, the existing four-story heavy timber parking garage was reframed with steel to accommodate five floors within the existing facade, with a seven-story addition constructed above.
Throughout the facility, a calming interior palette accentuates the wellness-promoting design. Extensive glazing allows natural light to flood the space and provides sweeping views of the city skyline from upper floors. A color palette of blues, creams, and natural wood finishes create a contemporary and welcoming facility.
The project brings outpatient behavioral health care, primary care, dental care, and medical education to the heart of Harlem. Specialty services include ophthalmology, podiatry, orthopedics, cardiology, and gastroenterology, as well as a specialty pharmacy. The Center is also home to Mount Sinai Health System’s Diversity Innovation Hub (DIH), a community-driven program with a goal to help communities address health disparities through equitable health technology design.
