Mary Washington Hospital converted its existing ward-style NICU to a private room model, in order to improve outcomes and enhance the family experience. The two-phase renovation required reconfigurations to the mother-baby unit and well-baby nursery.
Phase 1 created 20 private NICU rooms and a five-bay high acute care ward. All private rooms are paired with an adjacent local charting station. Rooms are clustered or paired with interconnecting doors to allow for twins/multiples.
The second phase of the project is to backfill/renovate the existing NICU to on-call rooms and support spaces.
