Newport Hospital Emergency Department

E4H completed a comprehensive master plan for Lifespan Health System’s Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. The plan focused on existing and future workflow, bed counts, service lines, and a network prioritization of space, money and time. E4H implemented an expansion of the Emergency Department from 10,000 SF to 21,000 SF, increasing the number of treatment bays, expanding triage capacity, expanding the waiting room and entrance space, and creating a dedicated Clinical Observation Unit and Behavioral Health Suite.

The design improved the patient experience, including delivering a more dignified care setting for behavioral health patients. The project increased the number of exam rooms from 17 to 29, including four behavioral health rooms separated from the general ED. the expansion also adds private areas for patients and families awaiting clinical results. The ED remained fully operational during construction.
