The radiation oncology department at BILH Lahey Hospital serves over 9,000 patients annually. With aging equipment, and having outgrown their existing facility, the department needed to relocate to a new space on the main campus. Through a collaborative process with the owner, the owner’s project manager, and the clinical team, E4H brought the project to life by balancing the needs of the users, the budget of the client, and the fluctuating costs of the post-pandemic market.

The 28,000 SF fit-out includes two state-of-the-art linear accelerators with space for a future third, HDR brachytherapy room, 13 exam rooms, a four-bed prep/recovery bay, alternative therapy room, administrative suite, and staff support spaces.

Inspired by best practices for patient care, biophilic design elements are incorporated throughout the space. Floor-to-ceiling images of nature, organic shapes, and natural wood finishes provide a sense of comfort and wellness for both patients and staff. In the linear accelerator rooms, custom ceilings are fitted with fiberoptic lights that shine through the dark like stars. Biophilic elements continue in the colorful lobby, which features a sculptural wall that mimics tree silhouettes, and a natural wood ceiling fixture to provide a sense of warmth. Tucked in the back corner is an enclosed healing garden with palm-sized rocks that are hand painted with personalized messages of encouragement and hope.
