Westchester Division

The master plan for the redevelopment of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Westchester Division Psychiatric Center addressed necessary programmatic and physical upgrades to its existing historic buildings as well as the redevelopment of portions of the 160-acre site.

The Westchester campus, formerly known as the Bloomingdale Asylum, was built in the late 19th century as a model for the humane treatment of psychiatric patients. It consists of a symmetrical series of pavilions interconnected with arcaded corridors defining private landscaped courtyards. It has the unique distinction of having landmark status for both the structures and the landscape, which was designed by the renowned landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. The project includes a detailed analysis of the re-use potential of the historic central core of the buildings, infrastructure upgrades, deferred maintenance programs, code compliance, program conformance and a cost benefit analysis of re-use versus new construction.
