Huckabee facilitated a collaborative process to help Frisco ISD design their first ever intermediate school. A 3-story solution was used to accommodate the available 8-acre footprint on the 11-acre site (minimized as a result of a 100-year flood plain and erosion hazard setback easement). Single story and 2-story elements were incorporated to reduce the scale of the building from the main road. The school was oriented to take advantage of the wooded creek and provides views from classrooms and dining.
Wortham Intermediate features a high-volume student union that is the central hub of the building. It serves as an active learning environment. Academic neighborhoods branch out from the student union and feature classrooms that surround open, science-capable collaborative space. Teachers share classrooms and space was designed to empower student agency. The Special Education Department (SPED) are built with open space to empower student agency. SPED is not centralized, instead it is integrated throughout the campus to maximize the experience for all students.
Designs include a third-floor art lab with an outdoor patio overlooking the main entrance and a gymnasium that is also used as a storm shelter.
