Building Codes

We’ve positioned our staff on a comprehensive set of building code committees, which represents a significant investment of our time and finances over many years. By virtue of this innovative strategy, we enjoy a singular ability to survey the current engineering landscape. We take it upon ourselves to understand not only how codes will change, but why. On behalf of our clients, we stay abreast of those changes in our designs, and we proactively plan for those changes when issues arise. After all, you can’t innovate if you don’t stay ahead of the curve.

Tornado Shelters

In many jurisdictions, building codes require ICC 500 tornado shelters in schools and critical emergency operations facilities. Tornado shelters and hurricane shelters require an unprecedented level of coordination between owners, authorities, architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, civil engineers, and facilities staff. Even before the requirements were first implemented, IEG’s structural and MEP engineering team was an early leader in preparing these institutions for the transition. We completed the design of the first FEMA-funded ICC 500 tornado shelter in Texas in 2013, have had staff serve as officers of the National Storm Shelter Association, and have proposed numerous improvements to ICC 500 on behalf of our clients, many of which were approved and adopted.

Geothermal

IEG has led the industry in developing Geothermal Heat Pump Systems technology, which utilizes the earth’s natural temperature as a thermal resource for HVAC heating and cooling. Compared to traditional HVAC systems, our technology can reduce a facility’s energy consumption by up to 50 percent in some facilities, drastically reducing the carbon footprint of our structures. 

We are recognized as a national leader in Geothermal Heat Pump Systems and have designed some of the most energy efficient facilities in the country by combining innovation with cost sensitive, sustainable, and holistic engineering solutions. Expansive Soils

According to FEMA, “Expansive soils are the most costly natural hazard in the United States, causing more damage than all other natural hazards combined, including earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes.” With experience and expertise in North Texas, a hotspot for the phenomenon, IEG takes an innovative approach to safeguard structures and MEP systems from expansive soil damage, carefully considering transition points to sidewalks, plumbing, and building foundations from one system to another.

Creating Value

Our team understands that costs don’t end with construction. We also account for long-term operational expenses, taking into consideration how people occupy and maintain the facilities we design. We ensure the complexity of our systems match the training level of facility staff, and we think through the practical uses of each element of a building. For example, schools that shut down during summer have very different heating and cooling needs than those that don’t. When we can, we locate components like air filters outside of high-use spaces, where they can be maintained without interrupting daily life.
