Texas Tech University Llano River Conservation Center

Located at the University’s Junction campus, the Llano River Conservation Center serves as the first point of arrival, setting the tone for the university’s expanding research presence in the region. With a design that responds to the beauty of the landscape, the goal for the LRCC was to be a good neighbor to the surrounding environment while creating a space that advances research at Texas Tech.
The LRCC connects research, education, and community engagement with the natural environment. The center consists of a multi-purpose conference and teaching area, learning lobby, catering and food preparation area, and direct connections to outdoor learning spaces.
Located within a dark sky conservancy, the design brings the landscape into the learning experience through generous glazing, access to patios, and connections between interior and exterior learning spaces. A biophilic approach allows the natural environment to become an extension of the classroom.
Flexibility allows the center to serve multiple uses throughout the day. Adaptable teaching spaces support university classes and programming, while operable partitions allow spaces to expand or contract as needed. In the evening, the same spaces can transition to community events, accommodating up to 200 seated occupants. Advanced AV capabilities and catering support further expand the center’s ability to host a range of programs and events.
Beyond its role as a research and teaching facility, the LRCC creates a new, standout destination for the Junction campus, bringing together university staff, researchers, students, and the surrounding community. By creating opportunities for people to learn, gather, and engage with the landscape, the center helps build greater visibility and interest in Texas Tech’s research efforts in the region.
