Interior Design
We are curators of the total experience of space.

Optimize Learning, Celebrate Interaction
From planning through design and beyond, Huckabee’s Interior Design team partners with communities, educators, and students to turn schools into places where students want to be. We’re experts at optimizing educational settings for curriculum delivery, but our approach to interior design also digs deeper, crafting a cohesive aesthetic while recognizing the whole student.
With psychological wellness, physical safety, social engagement, and relationship building in mind, our evidence-based solutions carefully consider how to best support your school community.
Investigate Every Detail, Customize for You
In the process, we investigate every detail, from ceilings and walls to functionality and adjacencies, confirming spaces are fit for their purpose and that they work well with your desired furniture and equipment. We get to know how teachers, students, and staff will interact in every space, and then we ensure those spaces are laid out accordingly.
With experience in designing classrooms, collaboration zones, cafes, CTE spaces, and more, our work is rooted in realizing real-world built environments. Our clients are consistently grateful to have us as partners throughout the life of their project. Some of their favorite moments—and ours—are the meetings where colors, materials, lighting, finishes, and fixtures come together to create a welcoming, engaging sense of place.

Visual and Tactile Interiors for Early Learning
Alief ISD’s Maria del Carmen Martinez Early Learning Center is a fully immersive facility that introduces pre-k learners to the district’s career pathways with 12 interactive classrooms, each of which provides tactile experiences centered around a theme. From floorplan to finishes, the interiors encourage engagement, community, and connection with the outdoors.
As students move through the building, the interiors meet them at their level. Corridors curve and meander to create a playful and wandering approach. Leaf patterns along the floors help them navigate to their neighborhoods. Structural columns that resemble tree trunks line the walls. Low windows allow students to peer out toward the courtyards, building a sense of community around their experience.

Interiors that Emphasize Learning from Past to Future
Multifaceted and playful as they are open, the interiors of McGhee Elementary School are crafted to support the development of all students. Just inside the main vestibule, a museum exhibit pays homage to the school’s namesake, a one-room building built by Joseph McGhee in 1916 on land he donated. The wooden schoolhouse was the first to serve Black students in Texas, with one teacher educating 1st through 7th grade. A chronicle of the building’s journey through the decades, alongside artifacts like the original school bell, sit to one side of the hall. On the other, a replica of the schoolhouse interior invites visitors to reflect on the revamped facility’s origins under a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Bringing Higher Education Inspiration into High School Design
No aspect of an educational project is produced in a vacuum. Take the interior design process for Georgetown ISD’s High School #4, a heavily collaborative effort that dovetails with the work of the project’s architects, furniture planning and environmental graphics teams, and the school district.
The new high school is heavy on neither color nor branding, giving it the clean look and feel of a higher education institution or a tech office. The aesthetic of the center is officious and elevated, akin to a professional reception area that treats students who are seeking career guidance as adults making crucial decisions. Throughout, grids of dark metal storefront frames lend a sophisticated modern industrial atmosphere.

Creating a Dynamic and Flexible Interior Design for Career, College, and Community
With storefronts owned by local entrepreneurs and run by students, high school classrooms that double and triple as higher learning and event spaces, collaborative zones, a central arena, and more, the Keith Bell Opportunity Central (the OC) is the most versatile educational facility in the nation. Given the groundbreaking nature of this CTE, the Interior Design team put special care and research into the design and material selections to provide a dynamic and flexible space that creates longevity and provides value to the owner.

Adapting Historic Features into a Modern Workplace
The Interior Design team’s work on the Fort Worth ISD Administration building is a case study in transformation. Originally built in the 1950s as a Neiman Marcus and later repurposed as the district’s administration building, this latest renovation honors legacy by showcasing FWISD’s history and adapting distinctive original features to the needs of a modern workplace.
Charged with stepping outside their usual imperative of crafting K-12 learning environments, the team created a sleek corporate environment where collaboration and inclusivity flow freely.
